New York Aims To Ban Gadgets While Crossing Street

img20After three pedestrians were killed in Brooklyn crossing the street while distracted by their electronic devices, New York State Senator Carl Kruger promised to introduce a new legislation on Wednesday banning the use of gadgets and portable video games while crossing the street. His next series of legislations plan to put further bans on not looking both ways, on being inattentive, and, to cap it off, a general ban on stupidity.

The bill proposes a fine of up to $100 dollars for talking on a cell phone or listening to an iPod while crossing the street, finally giving something to do to New York’s under worked police force.

"This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it’s becoming not only endemic but it’s creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand" said Kruger, adding, "I know. A Blackberry killed my sister."

Mr. Kruger has obviously never been to Europe. Between street lights and signs that are summarily ignored by drivers and insane pedestrians walking into the middle of traffic ("It’s how you cross in Italy, amico!") all Europe can do is laugh at the United States’ over-protection of its people.

How about this — how about the government stops treating the citizens of the US like mentally-handicapped school kids and let us make our own decisions? Either that, or let’s really tackle all of the dangers in our lives. Let’s ban especially sharp knives, hammers and cruel women. Let’s go after the things that really hurt us — let’s ban love, tall buildings and holidays that make some people feel loved and some people feel like jumping off of the aforementioned tall buildings.

Or. Or – let’s calm down here and let people make their own decisions — because we’re looking less like the home of the brave and more like the home of the padded insane asylum.
