Cyber Goggles Record Life, Find Keys
March 3, 2008
Have you ever forgotten where you left your glasses and then realized how hard it was to find your glasses without being able to see? And then you end up spending half your day searching in every nook and cranny, even ones that don’t make any sense (maybe they’re under this plate!) until you give in, buy a new pair, and find the old pair shortly after?
Well, kiss those days goodbye with the University of Tokyo’s newest invention — the “cyber goggles.”
What are the cyber goggles and how will they help me find my car keys, you ask? The goggles are a pair of awkward looking glasses that will record everything you see as you make your way through your day. A computer installed in the goggles will then analyze the video for recognizable objects, like your keys, your cell phone, your child — so on and so forth. You can then search for the item by typing in a keyword and, if the computer can find it, the proper location of the item will be show on the LCD screen positioned over your right eye.
It’s like being a cyborg with a bad memory.
Right now, the product is laughably huge and uncomfortable. Its in the concept stage and researchers are working to make it much slicker and, we hope, hipper as well. It’s actually a very interesting little product — searching for keys aside — to be able to record your entire day with little hassle could be more than interesting. This piece of technology could be especially useful to people with Alzheimer’s or just people who want to have a video library of their entire life.
Can you imagine that? Your grand-children being able to watch you, as a twenty-five year old, get a burger and be turned out by the girl of your dreams — it’s the stuff Future YouTube is made of.
The goggles won’t be out any time soon but we’ll definitely let you know if they are.
