Nginx secures $3 million in funding!

Our congratulations go out to Igor Sysoev and the team at Nginx for securing $3 million in funding. For those of you who live in Apache / LAMP land, Nginx is a uber high performance web server that has a very impressive feature set AND manages to deliver content at super-high speeds.

What is Nginx? It is an extremely high performance piece of software which powers trillions of “hits” per day for some of the largest websites and some of the smallest websites like ours. For large web farms, it offers the performance required to deliver static content with minimum fuss and minimum amount of code. For smaller websites like ours, it allows us to deliver both static and dynamic content using PHP-FPM and MySQL at high speeds as a replacement for Apache.

The funding round includes contributions from MSD capital, which happens to be a private fund setup by Michael Dell. This is interesting as it allows Igor and his team to perhaps plan to deliver a high performance server box of sorts – which we know enterprises love to deploy.

This is also in our opinion, the early days of forming a Russian performance power-house if and when web delivery is combined with the backend capabilities that has been assembled by the MySQL powerhouse Percona, who have quietly been building one of the most talented pool of MySQL developers and administrators out there.

In the mean time, congrats Igor. Please don’t forget some of us who made small but hopefully meaningful donations to your efforts!
