Playstation 3 Eye Camera Creates Mock-VR

February 27, 2008

Want virtual reality gaming? Well, thanks to Sony, the future is here. Or, will be soon. Maybe. But it looks promising…

Last week at GDC, Sony showed off the Playstation 3 Eye Camera — a device that lets the system follow the movement of your body. The hope is that the future of video gaming would look a lot like those arcade games with the sensor that let you physically move and dodge your opponents (we’ve spent a lot of money and a lot of time on those) — an idea that, we have to admit, sends our heart into joyful flutters.

There’s no real information as to when the device will actually be used in games, or in what games it will be used, or if this technology will be used at all. Though, the fact that Sony showed it off at GDC definitely implies that the technology is ready, and we can only hope that it’ll start being implemented immediately.

If successful, this could definitely be a huge boost to the PS3, which hasn’t had the release it dreamed it would have. In fact, this would, in our opinion, put it passed the Wii’s own little VR-world, which just hasn’t developed and become what we hoped it would be (come on, Nintendo, give us something that actually takes advantage of the Wii-mote — something that isn’t Wii Tennis.)

We’ll keep you updated on the release. Check out the video below to see how the fancy camera works.
