Laptop Reviews, ratings and comparisons
Laptops have evolved to the point where they can be extremely competant desktop replacements -- except in a few specialist cases.
Our laptop reviews are split into three major categories.
1) Ultraportable: These laptops are typically light and have a small form-factor. They're ideal for travellers and consumers who need to use their notebooks while on the go during the day. An ultra portable laptop will in most cases not include a built in CD-ROM / DVD player and will have a slower hard drive, designed to keep power consumption low. The small form factor is a definate requirement for those who travel in economy class, specially on Asian airlines like Cathay Pacific.
2) Mid-Range / Business: The mid range notebooks seem to be geared towards the consumer who wishes to travel with the notebook, but in most cases will be using it in an office or home environment. These notebooks have larger screens and faster hard drives. Without exception, a mid range notebook should include a DVD writer of some sort although many of them come included with a CD writer / DVD ROM combo.
3) High End / Specialist Laptops: These are usually focused towards entertainment oriented consumers who want to watch movies, play games and generally use the notebook as true desktop replacements. Most of these notebooks come with wide format screens and are equipped with DVD writers, video capture, multiple hard drives and dedicated gaming oriented video sub systems. i.e. These are the creme-de-la-creme of portable computing.
In our reviews, we focus on some the newer laptops released in mid 2006 and later.
