Maxtor 300GB Shared Network Attached Storage
The Maxtor 300GB shared storage drive is a perfect accessory to any home or office network. Instead of purchasing an entire computer, the storage drive provides a central hub to keep all important (and not so important) data on. Perfect for business files as well as Mp3's, pictures, videos, and so on.One of the most useful options of the Maxtor storage drive is its ability to organize documents. Simply drag a file to the Maxtor and the "Drag and Sort" feature will automatically copy and sort the file based on its type. It also allows you to set access levels to all of your files, which is an especially nice touch for an office environment. The drive also comes with two USB ports, which you can use to connect to printers, or other external hard drives. This means that you could potentially, though without any real reason, have a shared drive of over a billion gigabytes. The main problem with the Maxtor is it's a bit expensive. At over $300 dollars, it's quite an expensive external hard drive, even if it is shared. There's also a known problem with the power management feature -- the problem is that sometimes, it doesn't work. Which is, in fact, a problem, but it's nothing terrible and usually works. But it's something to watch out for.Maxtor is releasing a free upgrade on their website in October '05 that will turn this drive into a "PLUS" version. The features would include:* Maxtor Backup - Manages backups of your files on users PCs across the network.* SimpleView - Management software which allows you to look at the backup and storage status of the users on the network.* Media streaming - Play back digital photos, music and video to your networked home entertainment systems running Media Center. So, while the Maxtor is a tad bit pricey for a harddrive, it's a nice addition if you have the money for it.Highlights: * Browser interface which allows you to assign various privacy levels to folders* 2 USB ports to add USB based printers or other drives* 10 and 100Mbps network connections
