The Seagate 100 GB Portable Hard Drive provides large capacity external storage for those requiring extra mobility.
The drive is encased in protective aluminium and finished in grey and black, with smoothed corners, which is a look that certainly distinguishes it from its competitors.
This casing is well constructed and reassuringly sturdy and should do well protecting the hard drive inside. Furthermore this model is rated for 5000Gs of non-operating shock, which is very important for a drive that is intended to be portable.
This model is based on Seagate’s own notebook drives featuring fluid dynamic bearings for whisper quiet operation, rotational speed of 5400rpm and 8MB cache to ensure good performance over the USB 2.0 interface. Although the drive supports earlier USB interfaces it’s not recommended to use these for large file transfers as the performance will be seriously hindered by the low bandwidth of these earlier standards.
Because this model is designed for portability power is delivered via USB, and the device needs two USB ports in order to fully power it. This is both an advantage and disadvantage; it’s good as the user doesn’t need to carry an additional power adapter, which will certainly detract from its portability. But when used on a laptop that has a low number of USB sockets, taking up two ports does limit the number of devices that can be used in conjunction with this hard drive.
