SDIO WiFi Card Announced

February 15, 2006
Filed under General

Accton, a large Taiwanese ODM / OEM manufacturer has just announced that it will be releasing the world”s first SDIO WiFi card, jointly with PDC. The card is being sampled in February and expected to ship in mass quantities in March.

This is good news for many people who have smart phones based around Mobile Windows 5.0 or Linux and would like to add WiFi capabilities to their devices.

The main features of the card ( WM1212M ) include:

* Low power consumption
* SDIO standard (SDIO Card Specification Ver. 1.00) supported
* High-speed wireless LAN connection, up to 54 Mbps standard
* Backward compatible to the existing IEEE 802.11b
* Security: 64/128-bit WEP, WPA (TKIP, AES) supported
* OS supported by driver: WinCE 4.2/5.0, Pocket PC 2003, Mobile 5.0, and Linux 2.4.
* Size: 24mmX43mmX2.1mm
* Seamless roaming between 802.11b and 802.11g
* Fortified with Duratect (waterproof, dustproof, shock proof, ESD proof)

An interesting side item about this card is its use of Duratect — which coupled with PDC”s injection process makes it capable of surviving an encounter with a 2 ton car.
