Looking for a way to store up to 400 DVDs in a system that also can play them in high-quality HD with superior sound and video? Well, you’re in luck.
The Sony DVPCX995V DVD and SACD(TM) 400-Disc DVD Mega Changer Player doesn’t have the word “mega” in it for nothing. It’s huge, it’s black, it’s fearsome, and it’s really very useful.
If you have DVDs lying around in your house haphazardly — if you have Memento lying in the Mallrats case, and the Mallrats DVD lying on top of your DVD player, while the Memento case hasn’t been seen since it was bought, well then, this system is specifically designed for you. The DVPCX996V can store up to 400 CD-shaped objects (besides DVDs, it can also store data CDs, music CDs, and so on), and allows you to organize them by title and genre.
If it was just a box that holds CDs though, we wouldn’t be hawking it. The DVPCX995V is much more than that — it’s also a progressive scan DVD player that provides high-definition sound and video to your home entertainment system. It up-scales video to HD (1080i/720p resolution) and transmits high quality HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) audio. It also has an on-screen graphic interface, and can view DVD-RW/-R/+RW/+R, MP3’s, JPEG’s, CD-RW/-R’s, VCD and SVCD formats. It can literally play almost anything you put inside it, excluding, of course, banjos.
A few other nice features include multi-disc resume for up to 40 discs, custom parental controls, playback memory, and even background graphics for your TV while playing music (nothing like listening to Pink Floyd while watching the swirlies dance.)
What’re some flaws? You need a keyboard if you want to label your media, and you definitely want to label your media – which is as fun as taking a drill to your head, but it’s worth it in the end. The player is huge. It would scare bears — large, black, heavy and a bit unwieldy, it doesn’t make itself easy to place in the house. Finally, some users report losing their media titles after powering the system down — while this doesn’t seem to happen to the majority of owners, it’s something to watch out for. There’s only one thing worse than having to label 400 DVDs – it’s to have to re-label them.
Having nearly no competitors for this product, Sony could’ve winged it and created something sub-par. But the DVPCX995V is simply an amazing system. A great source of storage, a great DVD player, and a great buy.
