Sony Reveals 24.8 MP Sensor
January 30, 2008
Sony revealed what they promise to be one of the largest and fastest sensors ever available for digital SLR cameras, making digital SLR cameras the happiest digital cameras in the known world.
The new imager can generate 24.8 megapixels, which can reportedly create prints as big as three John Goodmans.
The sensor will be especially useful for action photography, using a process known as Column-Parallel A/D Conversion Technique — which includes an analog-to-digital converter for each sensor column. The sensor can also output completed images at up to 6.3 frames per second, with the side benefit of having reduced noise at higher ISO levels.
There’s no word over what camera the sensor will go into, though most believe it’s for Sony’s first high-end digital SLR which made a brief appearance at last year’s PMA expo (and may be officially announced in the next few days.)
