Skyhook Wireless, a company whose name sounds like the lair of a James Bond villain, announced plans to introduce a location-based positioning system, which, unlike regular GPS, uses Wi-Fi to compute the location of a Wi-Fi-enabled device in less than a second. The service, with free access to its metro-area positioning system, is called WPS (Wi-Fi Position System), and is accurate to within twenty meters, can be used indoors and outdoors, has no line of sight requirements, and will help families find their long-lost Wi-Fi enabled child.

The whole “media extender” bug has gotten into us since we upgraded our TV to a shiny new LCD HDTV with HDMI inputs. Unfortunately, if you’re like us, stuck in a country where there isnt much going on TV, and you’re waiting for Sony to get their act together with the PS3, you don’t have much to watch in HD. Shame isnt it?

Accton, a large Taiwanese ODM / OEM manufacturer has just announced that it will be releasing the world”s first SDIO WiFi card, jointly with PDC. The card is being sampled in February and expected to ship in mass quantities in March.

One of the hot buzzwords emerging out of the 3GSM conference is UMA or (Unlicensed Mobile Access). With industry giants like Nokia and Motorola throwing their weight behind it, many of us wonder if the “Unlicensed” part of the acronym will stand… just does not sound politically correct for the these people to be involved in it.
