The best way to keep your children quiet when you’re traveling is by showing them pretty pictures — and since nature is pretty much out of the question, Toshiba’s portable DVD player will do just the trick.

The SD-P1600 portable DVD player does exactly what the product name suggests — and does so extremely well.

With a 7″ inch widescreen TFT LCD display, the DVDs and DVD-Rs that you play on the SD-P1600 look surprisingly good. You can watch your movies in letterbox, standard, or anamorphic, and listen to them with the player’s 3-D virtual surround sound. Which isn’t to say that a portable DVD player is going to have amazing sound — but it does add a nice effect.

The player can also play WMA’s, MP3’s, CD/CD-R/RWs, and VCD discs — users can even look at photos fresh off your digital camera. A particularly cool feature is the 2 headphone output jacks included on the player — it ensures that you and your sweetheart can fully enjoy the movie while tuning out the rest of the world — it’s a great option, and really handy to have.

It’s especially handy to have when you consider the players one major downfall — the speakers. Far too small and weak, they start becoming slightly inaudible three feet away from you — and it gets worse from there. It’s not a huge problem — just get yourself a nice pair of headphones and you’ll be fine.

At only 4.8 pounds, the SD-P1600 is light, durable, and a great thing to have around on trips. It’s also surprisingly affordable and it makes a great gift for you, or your family.

Things That Make It Special:

* Includes several zoom modes.
* 3-D virtual surround sound.
* 3 hour rechargeable lithium ion battery.
* 7-inch widescreen TFT LCD
* 2 headphone jacks.
* Multi-format disc compatibility.
* Easily replaces babysitter.
